In early September 2010, Nintendo released a firmware update on its flagship handheld consoles the DSi and DSi XL (or DSi LL if you live in Japan). Depending on where the DSi user lived in the world, the update was either called the 1.4.1U update, 1.4.1E update or the 1.4.2 update. Having internet access via your DSi console means you can update your DSi firmware through the settings menu. However, the supposed "improvements to the back-end system structure" of the DSi that Nintendo promised with this update have failed to materialise, as the new update does not physically change anything with the console itself. It became apparent that the update was almost solely intended to block R4 DS cards from functioning.
R4 DS cards are adapters that are designed to be the same size and shape as a regular Nintendo DS or DSi cartridge. They fit into the back of the Nintendo DS console but have a slot in the rear of them into which is inserted a Micro-SD card. As long as the correct software files are put onto this Micro-SD card, the R4 DS card can enable a Nintendo DS console user not only to play games on their console, but to watch movies, play MP3s, read eBooks, and even view office applications. The potential applications of such a device can be as limitlesss as the imaginations of homebrew developers, who constantly create new and free software that can be used on R4 DS cards. There exist even some applications that potentially turn your Nintendo DS into a video phone via a WiFi network!
The iEDGE card is one of the most popular cards for the Nintendo DSi console, mainly due to the success of its predecessor, the EDGE DS. The EDGE DS card was known as the most rock-solid and stable R4 DS style product on the market. It came in sleek black packaging (R4 DS cards and most others came in regular boxes) that also made it perfect as a great looking gift. Be warned, however, that fake iEDGE cards are on the market. The genuine website is edge-ds.cn while the website of the fake is edgei-ds.cn, with the addition of the extra i. The fake product will not be compatible with the newest games and is unlikely to work properly with the newest Nintendo updates. It is highly recommended that users only purchase genuine iEDGE and other R4 DS cards from official retailers that do not stock any fakes.
Nintendo DS and DSi gamers alike can purchase their
R4 DS and other cards from DSCardWorld, who are based in America. All cards are tested individually before dispatch, which is guaranteed to be next working day, ensuring the quality of their cards. Their
R4 DS customer service is superb and turnaround is usually less than one day via e-mail.
